Our favourite beach in Key West, Florida
Fort Zachary Taylor Beach in Key West.

Key West is located in the most southern point of continental USA. It’s a paradise island that lives at its own pace. The sunsets are more spectacular and the drinks tastes superior. And let’s not forget that the weather is better.

The island is located so far south that the summer is endless. The warm and laid back ambience in such a trouble free enviroment makes it easy for you to feel welcome. But which beach should you go to in the dreamy city of Key West? It could be much harder than you think to find a favorite.

Why the beaches in Key West aren’t too sandy

The world’s third longest barrier reef protects Florida Keys from big ocean waves. Wow, that’s great news for the diving enthusiast. However, for the sandy beach lover that could be negative.

Without big waves the mechanism that creates sand in a natural way is missing. Hence Key West is not known primarily as a beach or surf destination. But do not despair! There are still a few nice, although at least to some extent rocky, beaches to choose from.

And the winner is

Our favorite beach in Key West is Fort Zachary Taylor Beach. The beach is located in the western end of Key West, approximately a 20 minute walk away from the always busy Duval Street. As it’s part of a state park there is small fee to enter.

Right at the beach there is a café, picnic tables, grills and restrooms in case you need a break. In other words the beach has what you need to spend a full day there.

The mile marker sign reminds you about that Key West is situated closer to Cuba than to Miami.

Other beaches in the Keys

If you visit the entire area of the Florida Keys we also recommend that you check out Bahia Honda Beach and Sombrero Beach. These are also nice beaches, but located higher up in the Keys.

You could also try other beaches in Key West such as Smathers Beach and Higgs Beach. But Fort Zachary Taylor Beach is the option that stands out among the Key West beaches.
